{"id":167,"date":"2005-10-14T16:36:00","date_gmt":"2005-10-14T16:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.zerowait.com\/?p=167"},"modified":"2023-05-08T15:31:56","modified_gmt":"2023-05-08T15:31:56","slug":"167","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.zerowait.com\/index.php\/2005\/10\/14\/167\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Who is watching your back?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recently there has been a lot of press about the storage security problem,<br \/>\nAnd Dave Hitz of NetApp in his blog has written extensively about the security issue. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.netapp.com\/dave\/TechTalk\/?permalink=I-rsquo-m-Going-to-Keep-Locking-My-House.html\"> He ends his blog last week with<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic; color: #ff0000;\">The bottom line is that for many applications, there is simply no practical alternative to cryptographic deletion, and lacking any practical solution, what people are doing is nothing at all. To me, the question isn\u2019t whether cryptographic deletion is perfect &#8211; the question is whether it\u2019s better than anything else we\u2019ve got. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic; color: #ff0000;\"> In summary, even though locks aren\u2019t perfect, I\u2019m going to keep locking my house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What has puzzled me for quite a while is the following question. <span style=\"color: #000099;\">If NetApp&#8217;s executives are so concerned about Data Security why are all of NetApp&#8217;s cabinets keyed alike?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000099;\">If you are concerned about data security, a good place to start is by securing your data storage cabinets. Changing your NetApp cabinet locks is an inexpensive place to start.
