Commodities traded in the financial markets for immediate or future delivery are grains, metals, and minerals. They are generally traded in very large quantities.<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/search?q=commodity\"> <\/a> <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><br \/>An astute reader sent me a question related to the business week article on NetApp. Here is the quote that the reader questioned.<br \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<h4 class=\"text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/technology\/content\/dec2005\/tc20051227_204146.htm\"><tt><tt>NetApp is not only notching hefty sales (expected to hit $2 billion in fiscal 2006) but it has also managed to maintain sky-high 60%-plus gross margins, <span style=\"color: rgb(51, 0, 153);\">despite building its gear with commodity, off-the-shelf parts.<\/span><\/tt><\/tt><\/a><\/h4>\n<p> And here are his comments related to the article.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"moz-signature\" cols=\"72\"><span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 204); font-style: italic;\">How can NetApp claim to be made from  <\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 204); font-style: italic;\">commodity <\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(102, 102, 204); font-style: italic;\"><br \/>parts when the Xyratex DS 14 shelves,<br \/>drive canisters, ESH, Power supply and motherboard<br \/>are all proprietary.
