{"id":636,"date":"2009-04-06T13:18:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-06T13:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.zerowait.com\/?p=636"},"modified":"2009-04-06T13:18:00","modified_gmt":"2009-04-06T13:18:00","slug":"takeover-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.zerowait.com\/index.php\/2009\/04\/06\/takeover-target\/","title":{"rendered":"Takeover Target"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I received a few calls over the weekend about<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=amGdxEWXfiBQ&amp;refer=home\"> takeover rumors<\/a>  regarding NetApp. People want my opinion as to what I think will happen.  I have no special information nor do I see any particular strong synergies between any of the companies  said to be interested in a purchase and  NetApp.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=a5yvlsD3xCsI&amp;refer=home\">The IBM \/ Sun<\/a> merger talks seem to be hitting some snags, but that could be last minute bargaining.  Since IBM is a NetApp distributor, I think there will be some fireworks if the merger goes through, since IBM is a big part of NetApp&#8217;s sales and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/03\/technology\/business-computing\/03blue.html?ref=technology\"> Sun and NetApp<\/a>  are tied up in legal wrangling.  If there is a purchase, it might be a reaction to an IBM \/ SUN merger, more than a long term strategic match up.<\/p>\n<p>The history of NetApp&#8217;s own acquisition strategy seems questionable &#8211; but maybe there was some hidden value in the Spinnaker, Topio, and Decru purchases that are not visible from  my vantage point.  It might be that NetApp is a niche player, and  does not fit well into the jigsaw puzzles of larger companies.<\/p>\n<p>NetApp&#8217;s enterprise storage products remain reliable, and a lot of our support customers are looking to maintain them for a long time.  The enterprise storage customer is always looking for  balance in long term value, scalability, and reliability,  and as long as NetApp focuses on these attributes they should remain a viable niche storage  company.<\/p>\n<p>And remember that  &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=amGdxEWXfiBQ&amp;refer=home\">NetApp<\/a> CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/search.bloomberg.com\/search?q=Daniel%0AWarmenhoven&amp;site=wnews&amp;client=wnews&amp;proxystylesheet=wnews&amp;output=xml_no_dtd&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;filter=p&amp;getfields=wnnis&amp;sort=date:D:S:d1\" onmouseover=\"return escape( popwSearchNews( this ))\">Daniel Warmenhoven<\/a> said in an interview last month that he wants NetApp to remain a stand-alone company.     &#8220;<\/p>\n<div class=\"blogger-post-footer\"><img width='1' height='1' src='https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/tracker\/11084229-3907233894703087520?l=zerowait.blogspot.com' alt='' \/><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I received a few calls over the weekend about takeover rumors regarding NetApp. People want my opinion as to what I think will happen.
